Small cast-iron slide latches such as this one were used on kitchen and pantry cabinets or on stand-alone cupboards. Because it is very decorative, we can date this latch to the Victorian age of 1880s to 1900 or so. To add to its charm is the porcelain knob. On many of these old latches, the porcelain knob has been broken or is completely gone. It also has its original matching keeper which is uncommon. This kind of latch has a plunger that fastens under the keeper controlled by a spring. These inner parts are complete on this latch. The body of the latch measures 1 7/8 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide. With the keeper, the entire length is 3 inches. Black flat-headed screws will be included.
