This large 4-inch pair of butterfly hinges is an unusual size. They are a half inch larger than the normal or standard size. This pair is marked Stanley sweetheart, which means they were manufactured by The Stanley Works of New Britain, Conn. around 1920. They have the flashed copper treatment.
Because the copper coating and black flashing did not endure very well, this pair is somewhat rough. The size and shape of the hinge, however, are quite difficult to find.
A half-mortise hinge is one where the flat wing is embedded into the jam or frame, while the butterfly wing is fastened to the front of the door. The pair can be used on either a left-hand door or right-hand door, (by pulling the pin and reversing the mortise wing).
The mortise wing measures 4 inches by 1 3/4 inches. The butterfly wing measures 4 inches by 2 3/4 inches. From ball finial tip to ball final tip is 5 1/4 inches.
We have cleaned and oiled this pair. They are ready for use. Screws will be included.
