This half-mortised hinge pair was manufactured by the National Mfg. Co. of Rockford, Illinois in the early years of the 20th Century. The copper flashing is in fair condition. The steel hinges were coated with a copper finish and then flashed (sprayed) with a black lacquer. Through the years, this fragile treatment did not endure well. The hinge pair are half-mortised hinges. This means that the plain half of each hinge is embedded into the frame of the door and the fancy half is fastened on to the front of the door. The spine protrudes from the door which allows the door to swing freely.
What makes this pair special is the shape. This “butterfly” shape is quite unusual and not very common. The plain half of the hinge measures 3 1/2 inches vertically and 1 1/2 inches wide. The fancy half of the hinge measures 3 1/2 inches vertically and 2 1/4 inches wide. From finial tip to finial tip is 4 3/4 inches. This pair can be used on either a left-hand door or a right-hand door, by flipping the hinge pins.
Screws will be provided.
