At one time, the Kelly Axe and Tool Company was the largest ax manufacturer in the world. William C. Kelly started making axes in Kentucky in 1874. In 1904, he moved his operations to Charleston, Indiana. In January of 1905, the company began to manufacture scythes. In 1949, the company changed its name to True Temper. True Temper closed on May 28, 1982.
